Chapter 1: Fear
It would be getting dark soon. Link had heard the hammering from the smithy earlier, but it had ceased. Gabora must have finished his work on the sword, hopefully he'd get to see it. Link was taking a break for dinner. The stable owner's wife was generous enough to invite him to eat there, so Link didn't have to walk home today.
Marin, the stable owner's daughter, sat next to Link, and tried to convince him that he should go to the Festival of Time with her. She went a few times before, but Link had never been to it. He was usually busy. If Marin could get him some time off though, Link didn't think he would mind going.
After dinner, Link headed back out to work, while Marin went to ask her father if Link could get time off. Link thought about the Festival. It would be nice to see Hyrule Castle Town.
When Link got to the stables, he noticed that two of the horses were gone. One of the horses had belonged to Gabora, but the other that was missing belonged to the stable owner. Link went to the empty stall to investigate.
Link quickly found a note on one of the two stable door. He pulled the note off the wall and read it.
"Borrowed a mare, I'll bring her back after I make this delivery -Gabora"
Link put the note in his pocket. It was a good thing Gabora left the note, Link would have reported the horse two horses as stolen.
When Link was about to go back to work, a man suddenly appeared in front of him in a flash of colored diamonds. Link jumped, but he tripped, and landed on his back. The sound of a blazing fire filled Link ears. Link looked around, seeing that a fire of diamonds was blocking both of the main entrances. Link turned onto his side, supporting himself on his arm. He looked around for another way out, he had no idea what was going on.
The horses were neighing and kicking at the sight of the fire, desperate to get out. Link thought for a moment that he had to open their stalls so they could run out.
The man grabbed Link and lifted him by the collar of his shirt. Link held his breath as a sword of dark metal was pressed against his throat. Wasn't that the sword Gabora was reforging? Why did this man have it?
"You're Link?" The man asked. Link didn't know if he should talk; he nodded slowly, hoping the sword wouldn't cut his neck while he did.
"Do you know Fi?" A second question came. Link didn't know anyone or anything called Fi.
"What about Zelda?" A third question.
"T-the princess?" Link managed to ask. There were actually two Zelda's he knew of, the princess, and the queen.
The man looked a bit disappointed. This man had grey-colored skin, and white hair. He also had a red cloak, with a sort of diamond pattern, from what Link could see.
"I swore to myself and to my master that I would end the lives of you and the other two I have mentioned." The man told Link in a hushed voice. Link knew what would happen now. He didn't want to die yet though, he promised Marin he'd go to the Festival of Time with her. Link closed his eyes, if only this was just a nightmare he could wake from.
Link opened his eyes as a red mare broke out of a stall. The mare charged at the man, and reared, trying to kick him. The man let go off Link and got out of the way. Thank the gods for Epona.
"Run Epona!" Link said as he jumped onto her back. He had to get away from this man. Epona jumped the fire, it seemed to be dying away so hopefully the other horses would be alright.
Marin had stepped outside just in time to see Epona run by with Link. Link looked back at her a moment, but he kept Epona running. He hoped she would be safe, the man probably wouldn't
hurt her, he was looking for others.
Link hoped Marin would forgive him for running away like this. He couldn't go back though, he had no idea if that man would linger in the town waiting for him, or if the man was chasing him now. He just had to get away, and stay away.
He might have to find a way to get to Hyrule Castle Town. He would have to tell the Princess, and the Queen, that there lives were in danger. What about Fi? Who, or what was that?
Link started to feel a stinging pain. He lifted his hand and touched his neck. When he brought it down, Link saw his blood. He must of got cut while Epona was trying to save him.
"Epona, slow up." Link said. He looked over his shoulder to see if anyone was following. When Epona slowed to a stop, Link climbbed down. He touched his neck again, still bleeding. Link tore the bottom of his shirt off. He folded the scrap of fabric and pressed it against his wound.
Link looked around, it was getting dark, and he and Epona were in the middle of a forest. He would have to create a quick shelter for the night. Making a shelter in the middle of the forest while its dark is really hard if you only can use one hand. Link kept the fabric pressed against his neck, he didn't want to lose any more blood than he already had.
Link managed to create a make-shift shelter, it wasn't much, and wasn't that good, but it at least hid him. Link wasn't sure what to do with Epona, he didn't have any rope to tie her down. Link decided to just leave Epona, if she wandered away, he could whistle for her, hopefully she'd hear.
Link lied down in his shelter. The unfamiliar place, the wound on his neck, and the situation he had just been in, kept him up for a bit, but he finally got to sleep.
